Premier Sale Report 2019

Posted on August 11, 2019 at 4:00 PM

Records smashed at Belclare Premier

There was an explosive start to the sales season for the Belclare Sheep Society, when the breed record, hogget ewe record and the total turnover saw considerable gains at the Belclare Premier Sale held at Kilkenny Mart, Cillin Hill on Tuesday 6th August.

Champion - Liam & Eoin Dunne

Leading the way and setting a new breed record at €3000 was the pre-sale Supreme Champion Tubber Eoin from the flock of Liam and Eoin Dunne. This exceptional son of Violet Hill Derrek out of a Tubber dam by another Violet Hill ram in 2017 and 2018 National Champion Senior ram JR1408203, was touted as a very special lamb even before the pre-sale show, having been the Champion ram lamb at both Athenry and Athlone Shows earlier in the summer. After a prolonged bidding war in the packed sales ring, he was knocked down to Tuam breeder Sonny Jennings of the Cahergal flock.

The next best of the day went to John Renehan of the Violet Hill flock. Violet Hill Eurylochus, a tight skinned son of Violet Hill Chappy, who was also the grandsire of the Supreme Champion, was secured for a bid of €1650 from pedigree breeder John McTigue. Roles had been reversed earlier on in the day when John Renehan secured Lot 31 Ballynulty Eduardo from John McTigues flock for €1600. This sharp ram is a son of Foras Cal and out of a homebred ewe.

Richard and John Lalor then claimed the next two best prices of the day. Firstly, with Lot 81, Rathkenty El Chapo a powerful twin born son of Rathkenty Alabama, who had caught the eye.

Mullingar Show Report 2019

Posted on July 14, 2019 at 11:50 AM

Attentions turned to Mullingar on the second weekend of July for Belclare breeders, with many breeders

presenting rams for the final time before they will be offered at the Premier Sale in just over three weeks

time.

Supreme Champion on the day was awarded to Rathkenty Dolly a hogget ewe who had defeated a

strong class in the hogget ewe and upwards class. Richard and John Lalors homebred daughter of

Rathkenty Chopin and granddaughter of Rathkenty Alabama was winning for the second Sunday in a

row after taking her class at Clonmel last weekend. Liam and Eoin Dunne had supplied the second prize

winner in the hogget and upwards class with a powerful three-year-old ewe, while the third prize went to

Richard and John Lalor with a hogget ewe sired by Rathkenty Alabama.

The Lalor brothers got their day off to a successful start when providing the one two in the first class the

Hogget ram and Upwards class. First prize went to Rathkenty Calypso a two-year-old son of Rathkenty

Beethoven, who was winning for the third consecutive year having taken this class as a hogget ram, as

well as winning here as a ram lamb. Second prize went to another homebred ram of the Lalors

Rathkenty Caesar a two-year-old son of Rathkenty Alabama. Co Kildare breeder John Murphy got on the

scoresheet for the day when sending out the only hogget ram in the class Rathkenty Diamond a son of

Rathkenty Alabama to take the third-place rosette. This ram will be offered for sale at this years Premier

Sale.

John Murphy then sent out the winner of the second class of the day, the Ram Lamb class, with

Nicholastown Eammon a son of Rathkenty Calypso. This well grown January lamb saw off a competitive

class, and will no doubt have plenty of admirers at the Premier Sale next month. Second prize went to

Athenry and Athlone show winner Tubber Eoin a son of Violethill Derek from Liam and Eoin Dunnes

flock, while the third prize went to Rathkenty Einstein a son of Rathkenty Alabama from the flock of

Richard and John Lalor.

There was a popular local success in the final class of the day when Eunan and Mark Bannon provided

the winner. Their winning ewe lamb is a daughter of Slanemore Hill Champ, a son of Kilmeany Achilles

and was making her first appearance in the show ring. Second place went to Richard and John Lalor

with a daughter of Rathkenty Alabama while third place went to Liam and Eoin Dunne with a daughter of

Cahergal Carly.

Clonmel Show Report 2019

Posted on July 7, 2019 at 1:00 PM

The picturesque Powerstown Park provided the location for Clonmel Show, on Sunday July 7th.

An outstanding display of sheep was presented and ensured that judge on the day, Belclare and

Vendeen breeder Ciaran Coughlan, had a very difficult task finding the winners. Local Belclare

breeders Richard and John Lalor made sure that the main prizes stayed in Tipperary when

taking home both the Supreme and Reserve Championships.

The Supreme Champion honours went to Rathkenty Caesar who had claimed the red rosette in

the first class of the day, the Aged Ram class. This massive two-year-old ram, who is a son of

Rathkenty Alabama has been in fine form this season after also claiming the All-Ireland

Championship Aged Ram title. Second prize in this class went to another of the Lalors

homebred stock rams in Rathkenty Calypso, a two-year-old son of Rathkenty Beethoven, while

third place went to Cork breeder Michael Gottstein with his two-year-old ram Cahergal Cassidy

another son of Rathkenty Beethoven.

The Lalor brothers Reserve Champion came in the shape of their Hogget Ram winner

Rathkenty Dansili, an April 2018 born son of the Supreme Champion Rathkenty Caesar. This

powerful ram is another ram who has been in winning form this season having also taken his

class at Athenry Show, and is sure to be very popular at the Belclare Premier Sale in just over

four weeks time. Second prize in the Hogget class went to Michael Gottsteins homebred

Coolkellure D-Man a son of Coolkellure Commandeur, with third place going to Richard and

John Lalors Rathkenty Debussey a son of Rathkenty Alabama.

The Lalor brothers also supplied the first two prize winners in the Hogget ewe class. The red

rosette went to Rathkenty Dolly a triplet born daughter of Rathkenty Chopin and granddaughter

of Rathkenty Alabama, while the blue rosette went to Rathkenty Duchess a daughter of

Rathkenty Alabama. The third place in this class went the way of Liam Delaney, with a smart

daughter of Alloon Colter.

The final winner of the day for the Rathkenty flock came in the ewe lamb class. Their winner in

this class came with a tight skinned January born daughter of Rathkenty Alabama. Second

place in this class went to Liam Delaney with a daughter of Alloon Colter while third place went

to Michael Gottsteins daughter of Cahergal Cassidy.

Liam Delaneys Coolgarragh flock went one place better in the ram lamb class when he sent out

Coolgarragh Eanna a very well grown son of Alloon Colter, and grandson of Alloon Bernie to

win. This triplet born ram is another ram exhibited today that is sure to prove in demand at the

Belclare Premier Sale. Michael Gottstein sent out the second placed ram lamb, Coolkellure

Eaton another triplet born ram, who is a son of Cahergal Cassidy, while Richard and John Lalor

provided the third prize winner Rathkenty Excalibur a son of Rathkenty Cheetah.

The journey back to Cork was made a lot shorter for Michael Gottstein when he claimed the red

rosette in the Aged ewe class with a powerful three-year-old ewe. Richard and John Lalor took

the second prize with a two-year-old daughter of Rathkenty Alabama, and Liam Delaney took

the third prize rosette with another three-year-old ewe.

Athlone Show Report 2019

Posted on June 24, 2019 at 12:50 AM

Exhibitors had to be as tough and resilient as the Belclare sheep themselves when attentions turned to

Athlone Show on what was a very wet and windy day.

Kicking off proceedings for the day was the hogget ram and upwards class. Tuam breeder Barry

Cunningham took the first prize in this class with his two-year-old stock ram Rathkenty Chopin, a former

All-Ireland Champion ram lamb, sired by Rathkenty Alabama. Second prize went to another Rathkenty

ram this time exhibited by his breeders Richard and John Lalor, when Their All-Ireland Champion ram

Rathkenty Caesar sired by Rathkenty Alabama took the rosette. Third prize went to Declan and Joe

Mileys All-Ireland Champion hogget ram Knockcroghery Dice a son of Coolgarragh Blaze.

The second class of the day confined to males was the Belclare Ram lamb class. The local father and

son team of Liam and Eoin Dunne kicked of their haul of rosettes for the day when sending out their

Tubber Eoin to win. This powerful tight skinned ram, who had also won his class at Athenry show, is a

son of Cahergal Carly and a grandson of Rathkenty Beethoven. Second prize went the way of Tipperary

brothers Richard and John Lalor with Rathkenty Escobar a well grown son of Rathkenty Cheetah, while

the third prize also went the way of the Dunnes with another son of Cahergal Carly.

The first female class of the day saw Roscommon breeders Declan and Joe Miley get off the mark when

their smart hogget ewe took the hogget and upwards ewe class. This hogget had been crowned All-

Ireland Champion hogget ewe two weeks previously, and is a daughter of Cahergal Casimiro and

granddaughter of Rathkenty Beethoven. Second prize also went to a hogget ewe, this time a daughter of

Rathkenty Chopin exhibited by Richard and John Lalor, while another ewe from the Mileys completed the

trifecta for hogget’s when taking the yellow rosette.

Finally, it was the turn of the ewe lambs to take to the showring. Richard and John Lalor claimed the first

prize in this class with a powerful daughter of Rathkenty Alabama. This smart ewe lamb was another All-

Ireland winner to take home a red rosette today. Second prize went the way of Liam and Eoin Dunne

while third place went back to Tipperary with the Lalors, with another daughter of Rathkenty Alabama.

Belclare All-Ireland Show 2019

Posted on June 19, 2019 at 12:55 AM

The NSBA championships at Cillin Hill played host to the annual Belclare All-Ireland

championships. The supreme championship found its way back to Co. Roscommon with well

known breeders Declan and Joe Miley sending out a very smart hogget ewe to take the top

honours. This hogget is a daughter of Cahergal Casimiro a €2200 son of 2016 Premier Sale

Champion Rathkenty Beethoven. The Mileys had supplied the first two in the hogget ewe class,

with the second prize going to a ewe bred on the same cross as the winner. Third prize went to

Richard and John Lalor with a daughter of 2017 All-Ireland Champion lamb Rathkenty Chopin a

son of Rathkenty Alabama.

The Mileys also supplied the Reserve Champion in the shape of their hogget ram

Knockcroghery Dice. This powerful hogget is sired by Coolgarragh Blaze who is also the sire of

the current breed record holder, and a grandson of TF131634. The Mileys also sent out the

second prize hogget ram, Knockcroghery Dakota, again bred on the same cross as the winner.

Third prize in this class went the way of Richard and John Lalors Rathkenty Dansili an April

2018 born son of Rathkenty Caesar. These three hogget rams gained an automatic entry into

the Premier Sale.

The Ram lamb class provided the Mileys with their final winner of the day when their

Knockcroghery Eldorado took the top spot. This well grown triplet who is a son of Teagasc Art

and one of the Mileys top show ewes, is bound to be popular when he returns to Cillin Hill in two

months’ time for the Premier Sale. Second prize went to Richard and John Lalors Rathkenty

Escobar a smart January born son of Rathkenty Cheetah and again out of a successful show

ewe in Rathkenty Circe. The Mileys also produced a full brother of the winner to take the third

prize in this class.

Proceedings for the day kicked off with the Senior ram class. This class provided Co Tipperary

breeders Richard and John Lalor with their first winner of the day in the shape of Rathkenty

Caesar a 2017 born son of Rathkenty Alabama. This powerful ram has also been successful at

this venue last year when taking the hogget ram class. Second prize in this class went the way

of Liam and Eoin Dunnes Cahergal Carly, a son of Rathkenty Beethoven, while the third prize

also went the way of a Rathkenty Beethoven son, this time Rathkenty Calypso, shown by his

breeders Richard and John Lalor.

The Lalor brothers book ended the day by taking the final class of the day the ewe lamb class

with a tight skinned daughter of Rathkenty Alabama. This ewe lamb had also taken first place in

the ewe lamb class two weeks previously at Athenry Show. The Rathkenty flock also sent out

the second prize winner with another daughter of Rathkenty Alabama, while third prize went the

way of the Mileys.

The final breeder of the day to take home a red rosette was Liam Delaney when he sent out a

very stylish ewe to take the Senior ewe class. Second prize went to Co. Cork breeder Michael

Gottstein while the third prize went the way of Declan and Joe Miley.
